From Research to Story: Techniques of Literary Nonfiction

5 Week Online Workshop

Seeing the forest from the trees is often the challenge for nonfiction writers working from in-depth research. Whether historical, scientific, biographical, or memoir, one of the biggest hurdles to writing is translating the complexities and details of research into a compelling narrative.

This 5-week, online workshop is geared for writers either in the midst of a research project, those just starting out, or those with an idea in mind, who are looking for insights and practical approaches in turning the specifics of research into a dynamic story. At the end of the 5 weeks, students will come away with new insights and creative approaches that will enhance an ongoing project, or inspire new ones.

Each week will include reading and writing assignments to help you develop your writing and explore approaches to the story. Readings will show us ways to navigate the space between the facts of your research and the story you wish to tell. Writing assignments will allow you to explore creative techniques and get supportive feedback from peers and the instructor.

This course is a specialized workshop for writers at all stages of a writing. It is limited to 12 students.

Key Elements of the Course:
